RIVA DEL GARDA, WHERE WELLNESS WAS BORN

Riva del Garda today has the appearance of a slightly sleepy and relaxed mountain village, not bothered by the frenetic life of the big cities, but between the 1800s and 1900s it was a border town and as such, characterised by that vivacity that only the encounter between people of different cultures and backgrounds know how to create.

Many artists and literary figures arrived, attracted in particular to Villa Cristoforo, then Casa di Cura “Sanatorium” (today the former Miralago) of Doctor Christoph IV von Hartungen (1849-1917) from the dynasty of the Von Hartungen doctors. The Sanatorium was not a hospital for those afflicted by tuberculosis (as were the sanatoriums in Italy), but it was a place to live in wellbeing, “getting back in shape” as we’d say today. The main attraction was the air and sun cure within structures made entirely of wood, well-decorated with doors and windows without panes, in order to allow the air to circulate. Then, there were walks and excursions, massages, gymnastics, rejuvenation treatments. Intellectuals and wealthy travellers like the writer Thomas Mann (1875-1955) and the doctor Cesare Lombroso(1835-1909), father of modern criminology, came here, attracted by the idea of “wellness”. On the other hand, Christoph IV Hartungen’s grandfather was the doctor who had first introduced homeopathic theories in Lombardy and he was granted a noble title for having cured Marshal Radetzky (1766-1858), the Austrian Field Marshal who for a long time was the Governor of Veneto’s Lombardy and famous for his victories against Napoleon.
