PUNTA SAN VIGILIO, IF PARADISE EXISTS, IT LOOKS A LOT LIKE SAN VIGILIO

The property, which also included an inn was purchased by the Humanist Agostino Brenzone in 1538 with the right, extended to his heirs, to make a “tavern”. Very interesting is the letter from 1553 that Brenzone wrote to his friend Silvan Cattaneo (1514–1564), renowned for having navigated the lake in 12 days.

Brenzone wanted to mathematically demonstrate the thesis that San Vigilio was the “most beautiful place on the lake, and therefore, in the world”. The argumentation is acute: since Europe was the most beautiful place on earth, Italy was the most beautiful country in Europe, the Garda Lake was the most beautiful place in Italy, Punta San Vigilio is without a doubt the most beautiful place in the entire world. But it took several centuries before San Vigilio became famous to the masses. Its notoriety grew especially around the 1950s and 1960s when the Englishman Leonardo Walsh obtained the management of the inn belonging to Count Bortolo Guarienti. Leonardo was trying to renovate the structure to match the level of the guests he was hoping to welcome: exponents from the cultural world, aristocratic and noble, especially the English in the beginning, but also Germans and Italians. People felt as if they were in paradise here, as one Belgian guest has written: “Si le paradis existe, il doit ressembler à San Vigilio” (if paradise exists, it looks like San Vigilio). Leonardo Walsh lived here until 1971. There are many anecdotes that describe his resolute and severe temperament, for example, when he banished D’Annunzio from the inn, who had been trying to make use of the place to his own pleasing, or when he quarrelled with Vivien Leigh, the star of the film Gone with the Wind, that night when she returned, accompanied by a friend, not quite sober and making quite a fuss. It is said that Leonardo had the habit of going to bed very early and had very little tolerance for disturbance at night. On Facebook one can find traces of him and many stories. Just look up Leonardo Walsh at San Vigilio.
