LAZISE, THE LIVING ROOM ON THE LAKE

Lazise boasts that it is the oldest free town in Italy. The truth is that, on the 7th of May 983 Lazise received the privilege of imposing transit and fishing rights. This is commemorated on a plaque in the centre of the square of the lakeside boulevard. Ottone II (that is, the son of Adelaide of Burgundy, of which we have told the story of imprisonment in the Fortress of Garda) while he was in Verona,

received a delegation of 18 arimannos of Lazise who asked him to give them the possibility of defending the hamlet and some privileges. In exchange, Lazise offered a strong alliance in support of the Imperial Army. This request and the negotiations were successful, still today it arouses the pride of the town which in May organises a historical re-enactment of the concession of the Privilege with military encampments, knights and their ladies. An interesting fact: some roads are still named “calle”, as in Venice, a sign of the strong Venetian domination of the town.
