GARDA, THE LEGENDARY CASTLE

Garda is a town full of stories and legends, both of a secular and Christian nature. It is precisely the history of this land that explains how the Benaco at a certain point started to be called the Garda Lake.

The word “garda” comes from the Gothic “wardon” (to look, from here also the word, “the ward” – guardian). Going back to the time of the Goths, Italy had Theodorus the Great as its king (489 – 538) who was in Verona. Probably it was the “Minister of War” Ildebrand, who had the first castle built on the Rocca di Garda, because it was considered to be an excellent observation point. Observation in Gothic was called “warda”. In the times of Barbarossa (late 1200s) the word “warda” was transformed into Italian, “Garda”. The Italian word “guardare” (to look) comes from here. The mystery is unveiled.
